Being a massage therapist requires hours of training and lots of practice. Because there are so many different types of massages that you can practice, you have several options to choose from. Whether it’s chair massage, swedish massage, or thai massage, there is coverage for each type.

At Beauty and Bodywork Insurance, we cover seven different types of massages. Today we’ll cover what each type of massage entails and coverage details from a BBI Massage Therapy Insurance policy.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is the most common type of massage, and probably what comes to mind when you hear massage therapy. Deep tissue massage is used to treat musculoskeletal issues, including sports injuries and strains. This type of massage involves deep, slow streaks to break up scar tissue as well as reducing muscle and tissue tension. Deep tissue massage also helps relax the mind and body, helping deal with stress.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is very similar to deep tissue massage. This type of massage is done by rubbing the muscles in long, gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. A main benefit of Swedish massage is relaxation, but it also helps increase the level of oxygen in the blood and can improve circulation and flexibility.

Chair Massage

Chair massage is another popular type of massage therapy. Because the client sits in a chair, this type of massage therapy is easy to transport and perform in multiple different locations. Chair massage also allows the client to keep their clothes on, and the massage itself doesn’t take a very long time. Not to be confused with a massage chair, rather, this type of chair massage is a special chair that provides forward leaning support for the client as they relax facing forward in the chair. Most clients will ask for a massage on their back, arms and shoulders, or head.

Hot Stone Massage

A hot stone massage carries several benefits and is another popular option offered by massage therapists. Smooth, heated stones are placed onto a client’s back or neck and shoulders, while the massage therapist rubs the muscles and applies deeper pressure. The weight and heat of the stones relax the muscles, and Swedish massage techniques are implemented with the hot stones for best results. Hot stone massage is often used to help with back pain, insomnia, depression, and anxiety.

Animal Massage

Animal massage therapy is most commonly performed on dogs and horses. Animal massage therapists use their hands to relax the animals’ muscles, stimulate circulation in their bodies, improve joint flexibility, and enhance the range of motion. It is common for animal massage therapists to work in conjunction with veterinarians.

Sports Massage

Sports massage therapy is a specialized area of massage therapy that deals with athletes’ injuries. The main goal of sports therapy is to help the client remedy their injury and get them back on track to playing their desired sport. Sports massage therapy is also helpful in preventing future accidents from occuring. Sports therapists will often work with post-surgical athletes to help them recover their range of motion, strength, and activities of daily living.

Thai Massage

Possibly the most unique form of massage therapy is Thai massage. This method of massage therapy uses gentle pressure and stretching techniques to relax the entire body. Unlike other forms of massage therapy where the client will lie on a table, the client will lie on the floor and participate more actively in the massage. Thai massage therapy is said to lower stress, relieve headaches, boost energy, stimulate circulation, and more.
