What is the Difference Between a Professional Policy and a Student Policy?

Beauty and Bodywork Insurance has been providing tens of thousands of beauty professionals with general and professional liability insurance for over 10 years. Becoming a beauty professional requires years of training and hours of practice, which is why we provide liability insurance policies for students.

Today we’ll explain the differences between the two policies and what a student would need to qualify for the student liability policy.

Why Liability Insurance?

Before buying a policy, it’s important to know why you need insurance and what to look for. Many people may see insurance as a wasted expense. However, when you understand the risks that beauty professionals face each day while on the job, you will see that is not the case.

Take a cosmetologist for example. While doing a client’s makeup for her wedding day, she finds she is allergic to the foundation used on her face and sustains an allergic reaction. The cosmetologist can be held responsible to pay for any medical bills or lawsuit expenses. If an esthetician accidentally burns a client with too hot of wax while waxing their brows or lip, they can also be held liable for these types of accidents.

No matter what type of beauty profession you work in, you will face risks each day, even as a student. These risks can be because of something you accidentally did (like burns from wax), or something a client accidently does (like slipping on company property). Whatever the case, you’ll be grateful you have insurance in place.

Student Liability Insurance Policy

As a student, you will likely face fewer risks than a full-time beauty professional. Because of this, you may think that student insurance isn’t necessary. However, your exposure to risks isn’t zero. Students in massage therapy school, esthetician school, hair school, and other beauty schools, will consider it wise to purchase student insurance because you will face risks as a beauty student.

A beauty school may often tell a student the school’s liability insurance will have them covered, but oftentimes the student is only covered for the school’s liability and not for their own. The school’s liability insurance covers products or supplies the school owns, tools or equipment they provide to the students, and stations that are built in. However, student’s property is not included under their school’s liability. This includes tools, equipment, and products that a student purchases on their own. Any harm or damage done to the school’s clients may not extend coverage to individual students! If you are separately listed on a legal claim, you would need to have your own insurance policy, even as a student. Also keep in mind there are times you may practice outside of school, and the school liability policy may not extend outside of the classroom setting.

The student liability policy is intended for students who are currently enrolled in a beauty or massage school. This policy is available at the affordable price of $67 per year. Because of this price, you will be able to focus on other aspects of your schooling—like tuition, supplies, and other expenses. To qualify for this student price, the beauty student must take at least 20 credit hours of class per week. When the student is 30 days away from graduating, they are no longer eligible to purchase a new student policy and must switch to the professional policy.

The student coverage includes:

  • General & Professional Liability Aggregate (Limit $3,000,000)
  • Products & Completed Operations Aggregate (Limit $3,000,000)
  • General and Professional Liability – Each Occurrence (Limit $2,000,000)
  • Inland Marine/Business Personal Property Aggregate (Limit $2,000)
