As a hair stylist, odds are, you have multiple people coming into your salon every day with photos of what they want their hair to look like—even if getting their hair to look like one of those pictures is a long shot at best. Often, the inspiration for a client’s desired cut comes from a celebrity or model, whose look has come from a recognizable and famous hairstylist.

While these hairstyles aren’t always attainable for clients who don’t have hours each day to spend getting their hair done, you can still give your clients a look they love. Here are a few pieces of advice from some of those famous hair stylists who are giving celebrities and supermodels the looks your clients want:

Hiro Haraguchi

Hiro Haraguchi is based in New York and has iconic names such as Vera Wang, among others, on his list of clientele. On his approach to working with clients, he said,

“Whether they are artists or business leaders, I design a haircut to bring out youthfulness and make them look contemporary… Every client presents a problem but no one has the same problem. Every challenge equals an opportunity to create good design.”

Tracey Cunningham

Tracey Cunningham first attended beauty school at the behest of Bette Midler, whose daughter she was nannying at the time. These days, her clients include Jennifer Lopez and Khloe Kardashian. On using social media platforms to boost her business, she said, “Social media has brought me so much closer to my peers and fans all over the world… It’s such a great and amazing connector and a terrific educational tool if used correctly.” Her advice?

“Advice I give to everyone in all beauty fields is EDUCATION! That’s the key, you can never stop learning. I certainly don’t!”

His advice on finding the perfect look for a client: “After years in the industry and working on sets, you get to be a bit of a chemist…You mix things to get the desired effect, so eventually, you know what works.” When it comes to the spirit behind his work, he says,

“If you hope for the best and put your heart and soul into something, you’ll find that it usually works!”

Mark Townsend

Mark Townsend is based in New York and has worked with the likes of Cate Blanchett and Halle Berry, but is most recognized as being the long-time stylist for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. After completing cosmetology school in Florida, he went to New York in hopes of catching on at Oribe’s salon there. After persistent effort, he finally got an opportunity to become one of Oribe’s assistants, and the rest is history. His goal is to make sure the looks he gives clients give them confidence:

“I’ve seen a celebrity walk the red carpet and I see that moment that they’re not sure and I want to make sure they know that they feel confident because the photos are gonna be better if they’re confident in their look, the hair’s gonna look better if they like it.”
