Insurance Agent

What Is an Insurance Agent?

Your insurance agent is a licensed professional who helps you choose, buy, and manage policies that protect your business. Think of them as your guide, ensuring you have the right coverage, so you can offer your beauty and bodywork services confidently.

Why It Matters for Beauty and Bodywork Professionals

As a service provider, you often work in rented studios or shared spaces, which means your insurance needs to keep up with you. Here’s why an independent insurance agent makes a difference:

  • You often need quick certificates of insurance and additional insured endorsements for studios, landlords, and events
  • You want clear guidance on what covers what: general and professional liability, inland marine, and more
  • A responsive agent keeps documents accurate and dates current, so your bookings aren’t delayed!

A great agent supports you throughout the entire insurance process. They:

  • Match you to the right coverage
  • Finalize your policy with the insurance carrier
  • Add the right endorsements and issue your certificate of insurance
  • Help you with renewals to avoid coverage lapses
  • Guide you through the claims process
  • Answer questions about billing

An insurance agent represents the carrier (your insurance company), while brokers work for you, helping you shop for coverage. The roles of agents and brokers overlap a bit, but ultimately, they both help you get covered.

Role What They Do Who They Work for Example

Agent

Sells and services policies; handles changes and documents

You and the carrier(s) they represent

You ask to add your landlord as an additional insured, so your agent helps you add this endorsement

Broker

Shops multiple carriers on your behalf, often on commission

You

You want quotes from several carriers to compare prices and limits

Carrier (Insurer)

Underwrites risk and pays covered claims

Policyholders

You file a claim for a client injury; the carrier investigates and pays if covered

Here’s who to contact to manage your policy:

  • Claims: File the claim with your agent, who then sends it to the carrier on your behalf
  • Endorsements and certificates of insurance (COIs): Contact your agent to add an additional insured, request waiver wording, or update names and addresses
  • Billing and renewal: Speak with your agent or log into your agency portal

For most policy changes and payments, your agent will be the primary point of contact. But, they’ll hand off your claim to the carrier and walk you through the entire process.

Check these sections to find who is who:

  • Declarations page: Lists the carrier, policy number, limits, and forms; often shows your agent or agency as the producer/contact
  • Certificate of Insurance (COI): Displays the carrier and coverages; typically generated by your agent or agency
  • Emails and user dashboard: Routine support (like changes or renewal reminders) usually comes from your agent/agency; claim-related messages often come directly from the carrier
