Lapse in Coverage

What Is a Lapse in Insurance Coverage?

A lapse in coverage is a gap of time when your insurance policy is not active because it expired, was canceled, or wasn’t renewed. Losses that happen during this time are not covered. Think of it as your policy being turned “off” until you restore it.

Why It Matters for Beauty and Bodywork Professionals

It’s crucial to avoid lapses because they mean you aren’t protected — and most likely, unable to work without proof of coverage.

  • Salon and spa owners, events, and venues require current insurance dates
  • Reinstatement isn’t guaranteed and may change your price or terms
  • Accidents can happen at any time; if your coverage lapses, you need to pay out of pocket to handle claims

An insurance lapse can be caused by:

  • A missed renewal or non-payment
  • Cancellation of the policy (by you or the insurer)
  • Nonrenewal (if you choose not to renew)
  • Simple errors, like an expired credit card on file

Here’s how a coverage lapse affects you:

  • You don’t have coverage for new incidents that occur in the gap
  • Event organizers or landlords may reject your outdated certificate of insurance
  • You may be considered non-compliant on your lease or vendor agreement
  • To reinstate coverage, you may need to start a new application, and you likely won’t be able to backdate coverage

A coverage lapse is the time when your policy becomes inactive, a cancellation is when your coverage is intentionally ended, and a nonrenewal is simply when you don’t renew your policy.

Term What It Means Who Triggers It When It Happens Example

Lapse

A gap when your coverage is not active

Happens after expiration or cancellation with no replacement

Any time coverage stops and isn’t continuous
Your policy expired on Friday; you work Saturday with no coverage

Cancellation

Policy ends before the expected expiration date
You or the insurer
Mid-term, on a set cancellation date
You canceled in May to switch carriers; protection ends May 15

Nonrenewal

Policy isn’t renewed at term end
You or the insurer
On the expiration date
You don’t renew on Aug 15; coverage stops at 12:01 a.m. Aug 15

Both nonrenewals and cancellations can result in a lapse in coverage. Stay proactive about your policy to avoid unwanted lapses and maintain continuous protection.

Avoid insurance coverage lapses by:

  • Renewing early: Set calendar reminders before expiration
  • Setting up auto pay and EZ renew: Automate your payment and renewal
  • Checking your documents: Make sure your policy reflects the new policy period after renewal
  • Keeping names, addresses, and payment details current: Always update your business name and essential information so it matches your policy
  • Contacting your insurer: If your coverage does lapse, contact policyholder support to purchase a new policy
