Named Insured

What Is a Named Insured?

The named insured is the person or business listed on your policy’s declaration page as the primary policyholder. It’s the person who owns the policy and is covered by it.

Once you purchase insurance coverage for your business, you become the named insured.

Why It Matters for Beauty and Bodywork Professionals

Named insureds are important because they confirm your business is insured. You pay for coverage, so your policy should have your name on it! Plus, having this detail correct makes it easier to obtain contract approval and secure bookings.

  • Approvals: Venues and landlords compare your COI to contracts; if names don’t match exactly, bookings can stall
  • Protection: Coverage follows the legal entity named; if your LLC or sole proprietor name isn’t listed, you won’t be protected
  • Admin rights: The named or first named insured can make changes to the policy and is responsible for maintaining coverage

Think of the named insured as someone covered by the policy, while the first named insured is the “main” person handling the policy. An additional insured is an unrelated third party you extend coverage to through your policy.

Avoid paperwork delays by entering your business details correctly from the get-go.

  • Match legal records exactly: Use the entity name from your state registration, with correct spelling, punctuation, and entity type (such as LLC vs sole proprietorship)
  • Double-check your DBA: Your “doing business as” name should be formatted correctly and consistently
    • LLC with DBA: Radiant Roots Esthetics LLC DBA Radiant Roots Studio
    • Sole proprietor with DBA: Jordan Lee DBA Glow by Jordan
  • Use your operating address: Match to your address that appears in leases or venue agreements
  • Clarify multiple owners and entities: Decide who is the first named insured
  • Make updates accordingly: When anything changes (like a new DBA or studio address), request an endorsement and download an updated certificate of insurance — with BBI, you can make these updates right from your user dashboard

Confirm your named insured status by checking your:

  • Declarations page: Look for “Named Insured” and (if shown) “First Named Insured” at the top
  • Certificate of insurance (COI): The “Insured” box should match your dec page exactly
  • Endorsements: Any name changes or DBA additions show up here; save these PDFs for your records
  • Online dashboard: Your business details will display the insured name as it appears on your COIs
