Insurance License

What Is an Insurance License?

An insurance license is permission from a state to sell and help with insurance. Licensed agents pass exams, follow rules, and stay up to date on the industry, so you can feel confident they truly understand the coverage they assist you with.

Why It Matters for Beauty and Bodywork Professionals

Your beauty and bodywork business needs the right protection — an insurance license is the “state pass” someone needs to help you find it.

  • Confirms your advisor is legally allowed to help with your policy
  • Helps ensure endorsements (like additional insureds) are added correctly so leases and event bookings get approved
  • Offers expert guidance on coverage options, so you can make informed decisions about your insurance purchase

An insurance license allows someone to sell insurance, while binding authority is permission to actually turn coverage on.

Term Plain meaning Who Grants It Why It Matters Example

Insurance License

State permission to sell and support with insurance

State Department of Insurance

Proves your agent is legit and allowed to sell insurance

Your agent is licensed for property and casualty insurance in your state

Binding Authority

Power to start coverage (bind a policy)

Carrier or MGA (managing general agent)

Controls how fast you can be covered

The program’s MGA binds your policy today so you can send proof of coverage to a venue

It’s quick and easy to confirm your agent is licensed.

  1. Ask for the representative’s name and NPN (National Producer Number)
  2. Go to your state Department of Insurance website and search by name or NPN
  3. Confirm the license is active, shows property and casualty, and lists at least one carrier appointment
  4. If you can’t find it or it’s inactive or expired, pause before you pay or share personal information

When you’re shopping for insurance, you should also know:

  • If your work takes you across state lines, your rep must be licensed to place coverage there
  • Only licensed people should process changes like additional insureds — unless you’re able to make those edits yourself through your policy dashboard
  • If your rep doesn’t have binding authority, you may have to wait for carrier approval before you can get covered
  • Online insurance programs often use a licensed MGA behind the scenes to bind your coverage instantly (check your declarations page to see who your carrier is)

Beauty & Bodywork Insurance’s support team is made up of licensed agents based in the U.S., and our ready-to-buy online policies provide instant coverage, so you can get back to work fast.
