Movies to Watch over the Holiday Break for Cosmetologists

The holiday season is upon us. There’s eggnog, presents, parties—oh, and a break from work, at least at your booth. You might have a lot of family members asking you to cut or color their hair, but for the most part, you should have some time to yourself. There are few ways better to relax than watching a movie. Because a lot of your life revolves around your cosmetology career, we thought it would be fun to compile a short list (after all, the holiday season isn’t THAT long) of movies related to hair styling that you can watch during your holiday break.

Note: Some of these movies are ones that you won’t necessarily want to watch with your grandma. We have provided the MPAA rating and some useful information about the film, but you should keep in mind that this is simply a list of some cosmetology related movies and not necessarily ones that we would recommend.

  1. Edward Scissorhands – Rated PG-13 for sexual content, some violence, language, brief drinking and smoking. Come on, it’s a story about a man born with scissors instead of hands! That could make most of life pretty difficult, but at least you would never lose your scissors.
  1. Sweeney Todd – Rated R for graphic, bloody violence. This musical is pretty bloody; you have been warned. It does, however, provide a good lesson of what NOT to do with your clients.
  1. You Don’t Mess with the Zohan – Rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content throughout, language and nudity. Note: The “Unrated” version would be considered an R rating. It’s Adam Sandler as a former Israeli Special Forces member who fakes his own death and re-emerges in LA as a hair stylist. Feel free to laugh out loud.
  1. Vidal Sassoon: The Movie – Rated PG for some thematic elements, language, and smoking. A documentary on the life of Vidal Sassoon. Labeled “How one man changed the world with a pair of scissors,” the film discusses the life of the man who came up with many of the products you may be using in your career.
  1. Steel Magnolias – Rated PG for some thematic elements, language, smoking, and some sexual content. Centered around Truvy’s Beauty Parlor in modern Louisiana and the group of friends whose lives come together. FYI you will probably cry.
